Dipika Samson gushes over SRK

Not everyone gets a chance to work with a superstar in the beginning of their career and Dipika Samson can’t believe her luck. She shot a scene with King Khan Shah Rukh for her first lead show Sasural Simar Ka. Dipika gushes about the experience of meeting Shah Rukh and shooting with him.
What was your reaction when you heard you would be shooting with Shah Rukh Khan?
I can’t explain what I felt when I heard that Shah Rukh Khan would be appearing on my show. It was an indescribable feeling. I was speechless for a while and when I found my voice, I screamed with glee. I am a huge huge fan of Shah Rukh and have seen all his films since my childhood.

What do you think of him? Is he your favourite actor?
He is so sweet and so cool. I used to love and respect him as an actor when I hadn’t met him but ever since I met him and shot with him, my love and respect for him has grown 10 times. As he had time constraints, he allowed us to shoot in his house Mannat. He was so gracious about the whole thing. He took care of the little things and ensured everyone in the unit was comfortable. That was very sweet of him. He is totally my favourite actor and now I will look forward to his films with more gusto.

How was the experience of shooting with him?
Incredible. We did some combined shots with him as he played a judge on Chak Dhoom Dhoom where Simar, my character, performs. He comes shakes my hand and encourages my morale. The shot was over too soon much to my chagrin [grins]. But what I remember the most is that in the shot he was supposed to hold my hand and give me courage to follow my dream. While rehearsals, he held my hand and didn’t let go till we completed the shot. I didn’t notice that as I was busy admiring him and staring at him.

What kind of response have you got for the show?
The response for Sasural Simar Ka has been good and positive. People feel the show is nice, interesting and has a different story to tell. People find the content fresh too.

Why did you choose this show?
I loved the story when it was offered to me. Secondly Simar’s character is close to my personality and thirdly I wanted to work with Colors as I had heard it is a great channel to work in. Now that I have I can say Colors is a cool channel.
What is the best thing you like about playing Simar?
Simar loves dancing and so do I and that is what I love about her the most. Though I haven’t learnt dancing in real life, before shooting the show, I did a week’s workshop in freestyle dancing.

What do you find most challenging about Simar?
Her innocence is most challenging to portray on screen. She is a small town girl with pure heart and innocent feelings so at times I get stuck and have to work hard to project the right emotions.

How similar is Dipika to Simar?
We both love our families a lot. Like Simar, I would never put my career before my family. I dress like her in ethnic Indian wear and love keeping my hair untied.

What does acting mean to you?
Acting right now means learning, learning and learning some more. I have done two shows before Simar- Agle Janam Mohe Bitya Hi Kijo and Devi and I learnt a lot from them.

What does television mean to you?
Television is a great place to be in with loads of opportunities. It is a cool platform as it has a wider reach as almost everyone has a tv set at home.

Dipika Samson - TV Shows
Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo
Sasural Simar Ka

This story with the tentative title 'Sasural Simar Ka' is the journey of an ordinary young small town girl, Puja, who has grown up in her middle class family, under her father's strict discipline and is well prepared to continue living under her husband's shadow in future. She loves her father a lot and vice versa, whose teachings have enriched her with strong values and rooted her deep in culture. But her simple sounding story takes a sharp turn when her dreams and discipline of middle class come face to face. Her passion for dancing and peer pressure induces her to enroll in a dance competition. She starts chasing her dream without letting both her father and her Sasural people know about it, with support from some family members and above all, her husband. This hide and seek creates many challenging and interesting situations which are dealt with a light hearted treatment. Puja's journey is close to the thousands of middle class girl's dreams living in small towns, aspiring for something but deprived due to their situations and circumstances.

Shweta Tiwari says Raja tried to kill her daughter

It's said that you don't allow Raja to meet Palak?
Gosh. You are straight to the point. To tell you the truth, I do let him meet her. If he comes to his senses, I have no problem. But every time, he comes sloshed at 3 am. He abuses, breaks things around. He is not in a proper state of mind. Palak is scared of him and doesn't want to meet him. You tell me, what should I do (shrugs and pauses).

Go on...
Raja used to cry and give sob stories to the police. They never believed me. Record karke lao, they said. One day, I recorded his violent and abusive behaviour at my house and only after that, they sent the cops.
Rewind. How did your fairytale romance with Raja turn to a nightmare?

We married after just three months of knowing each other. It was a mistake. We hardly knew anything about each other.

My family was against him. But I was 19 and stupid. After a few days, I found him drinking heavily. He blamed it on his social circle.

Soon after, I found myself pregnant. I went to my in-laws in Meerut. His sister Shalu was getting married. While I was away, I heard that he was getting too close to junior artistes and small time models.

He joined me there, and started cuddling up to Shalu's friend at the wedding itself. I took him to the terrace and questioned him about it. He slapped me so hard that I almost fell down.

Back home, he started having affairs Mala, Sona, Mukerji... God knows kitni thi! One of them even called me and threatened to throw acid on me if I didn't leave Raja. Palak started getting sick and I sent her off to my in-laws.

Raja didn't improve. I tried another trick. I called Palak back, thinking, 'kuch toh sharam aayegi is aadmi ko' but to no avail. Roz peeke aata, maarna peetna chalta raha, I still put it up thinking that something will change him. Lekin kuch nahin hua.

And that led to the breaking point?
Not really. Like a fool, I was still going on with him. But June 2007, I saw him cozying up with an actress who is now married. They were doing a play together and he told me

"Shweta, this is it, you are jealous. I love this girl. If u want to stay, you leave and this is how it will remain." And (sighs) I walked out of the house taking Palak with me. I went to my mom's place.

Please continue...
Kitna tolerate kiya tha. He burnt my wrists with cigarettes. He picked up and threw me against the walls. He used to physically and verbally abuse me in front of my parents.

He withdrew money from our joint account and gifted expensive jewellery to his girlfriends. No ornaments came to me. Surely, he wasn't wearing them either.

He was admitted to Maseena for drug and alcohol abuse.
As if I don't know. Nobody knows that I only got him admitted there. Aage aage ambulance chal rahi thi, peeche meri gaadi. Police said iska dimag kharab ho gaya hai, isko drugs chad gayi hai. They were sending him out of the city. I went and met a cop and got the entire hospitalisation done.
When did his drug abuse problem start?

I think it was there since long. He used to smoke some strange stuff and say, 'These are my herbal cigarettes'.

You have filed for divorce. Why is it not coming through?
He wants one of our flats. This profession is unpredictable. What if I need this property for Palak and myself? Both houses are in joint names. I am the first owner as I am the only payer. How can I give him one house? He will sell it and continue his masti. So there is a property dispute.
More?
Recently he even threatened Palak saying, 'Ek saal tu aur badi ho jaa. Tujhe jaan se maar dunga.' I have one bodyguard for her. I have another bodyguard who is constantly guarding my house.
You know what, he had reached a stage where he even started hurting himself with cigarettes, he even broke plates on his head.

He chased me to my shoot. Ekta Kapoor and her mom, Shobhaji have waited up to twelve hours for me if I couldn't make it to the shoot due to Raja's unpredictable behaviour. I used to go there with marks on my face and the makeup man used to patch them up.

Trials and tribulations of a single parent?
None. I was always a single parent.

Now you have Abhinav Kohli in your life?
(Smiles at last) Yes. I met him during a serial we did together. We were simply friends. Slowly, he and my family became very close to each other. I didn't know that he loved me almost from the beginning. Slowly, main bhi... (smiles again)

What next?
We want to get married. I am just going with the flow. Maine sochna chhod diya hai.
